A Little Portuguese Fish with a Bold, Spicy Personality

They call it Brava. We call it delicious. And after trying this combination of Portuguese horse mackerel, red pepper, chili, and garlic, you'll understand why.

These Horse Mackerel in Brava Sauce by ABC+ bring together one of Portugal's most beloved everyday fish and a creamy, slightly spicy sauce that's practically begging to be soaked up with a good piece of bread.

The fish is small but full of character, the sauce is rich and vibrant, and the balance between sweetness, garlic, and gentle heat makes this one of those conservas that's surprisingly difficult to stop eating.

At Ibérico Taste, we love discovering products that take familiar ingredients and give them an unexpected twist. And this is exactly the kind of tin we'd open when we're in the mood for something a little more adventurous.

Carapau: A Portuguese Seafood Classic

Horse mackerel, known as carapau in Portuguese, is a staple of Portugal's coastal cuisine. You'll find it grilled, fried, marinated, and enjoyed in countless traditional preparations throughout the country.

But not all horse mackerel are the same.

For this conserva, ABC+ selects the smallest horse mackerel available at the market, choosing them for their particularly concentrated flavor and nutritional value.

These little fish deliver a satisfying seafood taste that stands up beautifully to the bold flavors of Brava sauce.

It's a combination that feels distinctly Portuguese while bringing a playful, modern touch to traditional tinned seafood.

Brava Sauce: Creamy, Garlicky, and Just a Little Spicy

Let's be clear about one thing: the sauce is a big part of what makes this tin so special.

Made with red pepper, chili, and garlic, ABC+'s Brava sauce has a beautiful bright orange color and a smooth, creamy texture.

The red pepper contributes sweetness, the garlic brings savory depth, and the chili adds just enough heat to keep things interesting without overpowering the fish.

The result is a wonderfully balanced sauce that's flavorful rather than aggressively spicy.

And here's our advice: don't leave a single drop behind. Whether you have crusty bread, potatoes, or rice nearby, you'll want something to soak up every last bit.

Small Fish, Big Flavor

One of the things we particularly appreciate about this recipe is how well the fish and sauce complement each other.

Horse mackerel has a naturally pronounced flavor, and the smaller fish selected by ABC+ bring plenty of character to every bite.

Rather than masking that flavor, the Brava sauce adds layers of sweetness, warmth, and creaminess that make the fish even more enjoyable.

It's bold without being overwhelming, spicy without being too hot, and rich without losing the personality of the seafood.

For us, that's what makes a well-designed conserva: every ingredient has a purpose, and everything works together.

How We'd Enjoy It at Ibérico Taste

Our first choice? Warm, crusty bread. Lots of it. Spoon the horse mackerel and its Brava sauce over thick slices of toasted sourdough. The bread absorbs that creamy, slightly spicy sauce beautifully, and it's probably the simplest way to enjoy the tin.

We'd also love to serve it as part of a Spanish and Portuguese tapas board, alongside spicy pickles, olives, and a few slices of good cured meat. The acidity of the pickles provides a fantastic contrast to the richness of the sauce.

For a more substantial meal, try adding the fish and sauce to warm white rice. The Brava sauce does most of the seasoning for you, creating a flavorful seafood rice dish with very little effort.

And if you're looking for an easy appetizer to impress friends, serve it in a small dish with toasted bread on the side. Just make sure there's enough bread for everyone.
